Look at this picture to the right … did you smile? Do you remember that kind of feeling when you were a kid? Your imagination was in overdrive and you BELIEVED that you were living in that superhero moment?! It was magical, wasn’t it?

So there I was sitting in Tonyan Hall with a group of other parents. We were sort of nervous to find out what our children had been up to for the week. It was that “I hope they had a good time and didn’t break anything” kind of feeling.

(As a High Performance Coach, I am always on the lookout for frameworks or programs that make a difference in people’s lives. I believe that teaching our children these skills and reinforcing them as a family, gives them such an advantage both academically and in life.)

As I sat there wondering what’s next, the music starts to pulse and the parents exchange glances. Then, Claude, the camp leader, starts to chant “Keys open doors, keys, keys open doors” and we follow in time.  As he talked more and more about what they had learned, how they grew and what was next, I felt like a little kid again! The anticipation, energy and enthusiasm made me want to play full out, too! When I see that kind of excellence, it inspires me to do more and to be more in my own life, hence, I had that “superhero” kind of feeling! 🙂

In the span of about 10 minutes, Claude had us memorize the 8 keys of excellence that our children learned to use and apply during their week away from us. Those 8 keys were taught to us in a framework that was fun and engaging AND I still remember the signs for each one and what they meant! There was some powerful teaching methodology going on, because he used kinesthetic, visual and auditory cues to make the information stick!

Keys open doors. Keys, keys, open doors – Claude, Camp Director

This camp is based on the work of Bobbi DePorter, who is the founder and president of Learning Forum International. She developed the 8 Keys of Excellence as a character education tool and has been running Supercamp since 1982!

One of the things that strucked me besides the energy, enthusiasm, and excellence displayed by all of DePorter’s staff was how much they cared about their students and how much they wanted them to succeed.

After attending the “Trade Show” where our children taught us how to use what they learned at camp, we witnessed the “Key Ceremony” in which our children received their Key to remind them of who they committed to be and how they committed to live once they left camp. It was the culmination of a week of learning that included study habits, speed reading, retention strategies, team building, priming one’s state, outdoor adventure day, making life long friends and so much more. I have to say I may have shed a tear or two or three.

These keys have made a difference in the quality of my family’s interactions and the focus of my daughters’ endeavers. Below is a summary, from their website, of the 8 keys program that you can participate in – for free – with your family at home:

The 8 Keys of Excellence family character development program gives parents a simple and engaging eight-week action plan for establishing core character principles in their kids, strengthening family relationships and deepening the feeling of belonging, safety and connectedness.

When you register for this free program, you gain login access to the family area of this website, which contains a wealth of 8 Keys resources, videos, a MyFamily page where you can keep notes throughout the program and a discussion board to interact with other families.

Each week for eight weeks, your family will receive an email that links to the Key-of-the-week’s web page. Each Key’s page leads your family through a 20-30 minute conversation and activity designed to give meaning and insights into that Key. When the eight weeks are over, we’ll continue to send you information periodically to reinforce and enhance your family’s learning and character development.
